Les Tremayne
Biography
Les Tremayne was a British-born actor who worked in vaudeville, radio, film, theater, and television. Born in London, he moved to Chicago as a child and began in community theater before starting radio work at seventeen. From 1936 to 1942 he took over from Don Ameche as star of The First Nighter Program, and in the following decade he was often on more than one weekly broadcast. His radio roles included The Adventures of the Thin Man, The Falcon, and detective Pat Abbott on Abbott Mysteries from 1946 to 1947. He was once named one of American radio's three most distinctive voices. His films included The War of the Worlds (1953) and North by Northwest (1959). On Broadway he appeared in Heads or Tails and Detective Story, and on television he played Billy Herbert in One Man's Family and Inspector Richard Queen on The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen. The National Radio Hall of Fame elected him in 1995.
