Plot summary
During the Great Depression, Roger Shumann, a onetime World War I flying ace, works as a barnstorming pilot on the rural airshow circuit. His wife, LaVerne, works as the act's parachutist. Their son, Jack, worships his father, and the mechanic Jiggs travels with them. Burke Devlin, a reporter for a New Orleans newspaper, arrives to write about the Shumanns' act. He is troubled by how carelessly Roger treats his family, and he is drawn to the neglected LaVerne.

- Douglas Sirk had long admired William Faulkner's novel Pylon, writing an unfilmed script adaptation of it at UFA in the 1930s; he later said the novel impressed him with its characters and that he was always very interested in flying.

Sirk said writer George Zuckerman helped persuade producer Albert Zugsmith to make The Tarnished Angels, Zugsmith being attracted to the Dorothy Malone part; Sirk called Zugsmith "the only producer I could persuade to reject the happy end", so the film ends with Hudson's and Malone's characters apart in "a cool parting of the ways".- Sirk said he had to shoot The Tarnished Angels in black and white because Universal "didn't trust the story".
