Biography

Hayley Mills is an English actress who started as a child performer and won early recognition, including a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer for Tiger Bay (1959), the Academy Juvenile Award for Pollyanna (1960), and a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year in 1961. Born in Marylebone, London, to actor John Mills and actress Mary Hayley Bell, she became a Disney star in films such as The Parent Trap (1961), where she played twins, and That Darn Cat! (1965). Her role in Whistle Down the Wind (1961) brought a BAFTA nomination, and she later moved into more adult parts and stage work, making her West End debut in a 1969 revival of Peter Pan. On television she starred in The Flame Trees of Thika and Good Morning, Miss Bliss, and from 2007 to 2012 she appeared in Wild at Heart. She received the Disney Legends award and published a memoir in 2021.

A role that slipped away
In 1985, Mills was considered for the voice of Princess Eilonwy in Disney's animated film The Black Cauldron, but the British voice actress Susan Sheridan was later given the part instead.
A first
Trap gave Mills her first big part in a mainstream American movie in almost 60 years, after she acted in The Trouble with Angels in 1966.
Behind the award
Mills won a Theatre World Award for her 2000 Off-Broadway debut in Noël Coward's Suite in Two Keys, opposite Judith Ivey.
