Avril Angers
Biography
Avril Angers was an English actress and stand-up comic. Born in Liverpool in 1918, she started as a dancer and performed with the Tiller Girls before joining ENSA in the Second World War, touring the Middle East and Africa. In Cairo a BBC radio producer, Douglas Moodie, saw her and helped her onto broadcasts such as Variety Bandbox and Carroll Levis' Discoveries. She made her West End debut at the Palace Theatre in the 1944 revue Keep Going. In 1949 she was in the original cast of How Do You View?, British television's first comedy series, with Terry-Thomas. One of the early female stand-up comics, she could act as straight man to performers such as Frankie Howerd and Arthur Askey. Her television work included Dad's Army and Are You Being Served?. At the Savoy Theatre in 1976 she played Miss Marple in Murder at the Vicarage. She was remembered for playing Hayley Mills's shrewish mother in The Family Way (1966).
