Plot summary
On a train, Miss Jane Marple sees a young woman being strangled in a carriage on a parallel track. The police can find no trace of the crime or the body, so she investigates on her own. With help from her friend Jim Stringer, she traces the likely spot to the grounds of Ackenthorpe Hall and takes a job there as housekeeper. Her employer, Luther Ackenthorpe, is difficult, and his household includes his daughter Emma, his sons Cedric, Harold and Albert, his grandson Alexander, the physician Dr Quimper, the gardener Hillman and the servant Mrs Kidder. While she keeps house, Miss Marple searches the estate for the missing corpse.

- The manor house where Miss Marple investigates is called Rutherford Hall in the novel, but the film changed it to Ackenthorpe Hall so as not to use the leading actress's surname; the family name Crackenthorpe was shortened to Ackenthorpe.
- The film was the first screen appearance of Christie's female detective, called in the article 'a blueprint for the spinster sleuth who exploits her appearance as a harmless, nosy old woman'.
