  • American producer Sy Weintraub sued Granada Television after it announced its own Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett, and the case settled out of court for around two million pounds, enough to cover Weintraub's costs on both The Sign of Four and The Hound of the Baskervilles and still leave him a profit.
  • The Sign of Four was shot at the same time as The Hound of the Baskervilles, and the overlapping schedules stopped David Healy from playing Dr Watson in both: Donald Churchill played Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles instead.
