Plot summary
In 1895 Father Sandor stops the local authorities from treating a dead woman's body as a vampire's, and reminds the presiding priest that Count Dracula was destroyed in 1885. At an inn he warns two English couples, the brothers Alan and Charles Kent with their wives Helen and Diana, to keep away from Karlsbad, and they ignore him. Their coach driver abandons them two kilometers short of the town as night comes on, and a carriage with no coachman carries them to a castle. Inside, a table is set for four and their bags are already unpacked in the bedrooms. Klove, the servant, says his master, the late Count Dracula, left orders that the castle be kept ready for strangers.

- Christopher Lee said he did not speak in the film: he read the script, saw the dialogue and told Hammer, "If you think I'm going to say any of these lines, you're very much mistaken."
- Barbara Shelley, who plays Helen Kent, accidentally swallowed one of her vampire fangs during a scene and had to drink salt water to bring it back up, because the tight shooting schedule meant there was no spare set of fangs.
- The film was shot back to back with Rasputin, the Mad Monk, sharing many of the same sets and cast, among them Christopher Lee, Barbara Shelley, Francis Matthews and Suzan Farmer.
- A 15-page comics adaptation by Donne Avenell and John Bolton in The House of Hammer #6 introduced Father Shandor, who spawned an ongoing feature as a demon-fighting priest; written by Steve Moore, Father Shandor, Demon Stalker ran in House of Hammer issues #8, 16, 21 and 24.
