Plot summary
Count Mitterhaus, a nobleman rumored to be a vampire, feeds on the children of Stetl until the villagers storm his castle and drive a stake through his heart. With his last breath he promises that their children will die so he can live again. Fifteen years later Stetl is dying of plague, and neighboring towns have thrown up roadblocks with orders to shoot anyone who tries to leave. Dr. Kersh believes the sickness is a disease and not a curse, and he slips out to fetch medicine from the capital, his son Anton helping him past the armed men. Dora Mueller, sent away for safety, is already heading back to her father and to Anton. Then the Circus of Night gets through the blockade and arrives in the village.
