Plot summary
In 1891, Queen Victoria gives a document to her Foreign Secretary, Lord Redcliff, and that same night it is taken from his safe. If it reaches the wrong hands, a war may start, so the Queen appeals to Sherlock Holmes. Holmes, deciding to keep out of sight for a time, sends word that his brother Sigerson should handle his smaller matters. Sigerson works as a private investigator and has spent decades in Sherlock's shadow without credit, convinced he is the cleverer of the two. Orville Stanley Sacker, a records clerk at Scotland Yard, becomes his assistant. A visitor then arrives claiming to be Bessie Bellwood, a music hall performer who says someone is blackmailing her.
