Sylvia Sidney
Biography
Sylvia Sidney was an American stage and screen actress whose career lasted more than seventy years. Born Sophia Kosow in the Bronx, she took up performing as a teenager, trained at the Theater Guild's school, and appeared as an extra in The Sorrows of Satan in 1926 before her Broadway debut in The Squall. She became a star in the 1930s playing working-class heroines and the girlfriends or sisters of gangsters, in films such as City Streets (1931), Street Scene (1931), Sabotage (1936), Fury (1936) and Dead End (1937). Sidney earned an Academy Award nomination for Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams in 1973 and a Golden Globe for the television production An Early Frost. Later roles included I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977), Damien: Omen II (1978) and Beetlejuice (1988), which won her a Saturn Award; her final part was in Mars Attacks! (1996).
