Plot summary
Joe Wilson owns a gas station that he runs with his brothers, and he is engaged to marry Katherine Grant, who lives in a small town some distance away. He sets out to visit her there, and before he arrives he is arrested for the kidnapping of a child, taken for a wanted man on evidence that is only circumstantial. Word of the arrest spreads through the town, growing more distorted with each telling, and a crowd gathers at the jail. The sheriff will not give up his prisoner to them.

- Fritz Lang wanted to make Fury about a black victim of a lynching, but MGM rejected the idea, and the studio also changed the protagonist from a lawyer to a working-class man because it preferred catering to the masses.
- Norman Krasna was inspired to write Fury after reading about a lynching in The Nation, then pitched it verbally to Joseph L. Mankiewicz at MGM, who dictated it; Krasna claimed he never wrote a script.
