Plot summary

On 27 June 1976, four terrorists from a Palestinian faction hijack an Air France Airbus A300 at Athens and divert it to Entebbe Airport in Uganda, where President Idi Amin allows them to land. The non-Jewish passengers are freed, while about 100 Jewish passengers and the air crew are held. The terrorists demand the release of 40 Palestinian guerrillas jailed in Israel, but Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's cabinet refuses to negotiate. The army prepares four Lockheed C-130 Hercules transports for a raid led by Brig. Gen. Dan Shomron, more than 2,500 miles from home and set for the Jewish Sabbath, while talks with the hijackers go on.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • It was one of three films made in the 1970s based on the Entebbe raid, and ABC rushed its own version, Victory at Entebbe, through production and broadcast it one month earlier, in December 1976.
  • Raid on Entebbe was filmed entirely in the United States, with Stockton Metropolitan Airport in Stockton, California serving as both Entebbe Airport and an Israeli Air Force base, and producers Blatt and Scherick turned to the Hollywood Squadron, the 146th Airlift Wing of the California Air National Guard, for three C-130 Hercules transports.
  • In May 1977, local Thai authorities banned the film from being shown in Thailand, arguing that it presented a one-sided image of the Middle East conflict and posed a risk to the nation's relations with Arab states.
  • The portrayal of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was Peter Finch's final performance: he died five days after the film's release.
  • SPOILERDuring the raid, the breach unit commander Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of the future Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was killed along with three of the hostages.
