Biography

Allan Arbus was an American actor and photographer who was born in New York City and discovered acting in a student play at DeWitt Clinton High School. During the 1940s he took on photographic work for the United States Army and later built a career in advertising photography, contributing images to magazines such as Glamour, Seventeen, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. In 1969 he moved to California to try acting, and his early break came with the lead in Robert Downey Sr.'s cult movie Greaser's Palace (1972). He then appeared in Scream, Pretty Peggy (1973), Cinderella Liberty (1973), Coffy (1973), Damien: Omen II (1978) and The Electric Horseman (1979). He became best known as psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Freedman on the CBS series MASH and went on to act in more than seventy television shows and movies, including guest roles on Law & Order, L.A. Law, Matlock, Starsky and Hutch and Judging Amy.
