Plot summary
Michael Pierson is a successful Chicago lawyer who has never told his parents that he is gay. A coughing fit at work puts him in a hospital, where a doctor tells him he has been exposed to HIV. He returns home to more news: his partner Peter admits to sex outside the relationship, and Michael throws him out of the house. Michael then travels to his parents, where he comes out to them and tells them about his diagnosis. His father Nick owns a lumber company and reacts with anger. His mother Katherine, once a concert pianist, tries to take in the news. His grandmother Beatrice and his sister Susan are part of the family he must face.
