Plot summary

In 1969, Pearl Berman returns to her house in Queens after burying her husband Jack, and her relatives argue about which parkway is the fastest route to the cemetery. Among the mourners is Joe Meledandri, an Italian who met Jack years earlier in a bar and talked him into going back to his wife. Joe has loved Pearl in secret since then, and now that she is a widow he decides the moment has come, beginning with an invitation to coffee. Her family objects on religious grounds, and Pearl's two divorced daughters come with the courtship: Bibby, who is lonely, and Norma, who dresses as celebrities.
