Trailer

Plot summary

Fred O'Connor and Bob Carvo are corrupt narcotics detectives in the NYPD. They spend their illegal earnings on an apartment they treat as an investment. Carvo feels guilty about what they do and wants to end the partnership, asking O'Connor to buy out his half of the apartment so that he can sell it. O'Connor notices a young man following him, and the stranger turns up inside the apartment. He gives his name as Fred Mason and claims to be the killer of officers from the Narcotics Division, the man the media calls the Copkiller. O'Connor dismisses the claim, and Mason threatens to tell the authorities about the apartment and expose the corruption. Carvo wants Mason released. O'Connor keeps him bound in the bathroom instead, with the door reinforced by a deadbolt.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Copkiller (1983)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • John Lydon's post-punk group Public Image Ltd was supposed to score the film, working on the material with bandmates Keith Levene and Martin Atkins by long distance; the music went unused and the announced mini-album, You Are Now Entering a Commercial Zone, never appeared.
  • With PiL absent, Keith Levene took the unfinished album tapes, mixed them himself and flew to London to present them to Richard Branson as the finished PiL album Commercial Zone for Virgin Records, while John Lydon abandoned the tapes and re-recorded the album with session musicians.
  • Copkiller has undergone a reevaluation and become a cult classic thanks to Harvey Keitel and John Lydon, and is acknowledged as a precursor to Abel Ferrara's similarly-themed Bad Lieutenant (1992).
  • Shot on location in New York City and at Cinecittà Studios in Rome between March and April 1982, Copkiller remains John Lydon's only starring role in a film to date.
