Plot summary
Tenants of a Lower East Side tenement in New York City sit on the front stoop on a hot summer evening, and the neighbors' talk turns to Anna Maurrant and Steve Sankey, the milkman. Emma Jones and the others gossip about the two of them until Anna's husband Frank arrives, rude and unfriendly, and the subject changes. The Maurrants' teenage daughter Rose is under sexual pressure from her married boss, Bert Easter, and prefers the company of Sam Kaplan, a kind young Jewish neighbor who has a crush on her. Frank tells his wife the next morning that business is taking him to Stamford.

- King Vidor shot all of Street Scene on a single set built to look like half a city block of New York house fronts; the only scene shot elsewhere was one set inside a taxi.
- Alfred Newman's theme for Street Scene was reused in other movies, including Cry of the City, Kiss of Death, I Wake Up Screaming, Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Dark Corner and Gentleman's Agreement, and as the overture to How to Marry a Millionaire.
