Plot summary
A feud between the Tolliver and Falin families has run for longer than anyone in the Eastern Kentucky coalfield remembers. Jack Hale, an engineer, comes to the region on behalf of coal and railroad interests. He saves Dave Tolliver, whose injury has turned to gangrene. Dave hopes to marry his cousin June, but she is drawn to Hale instead. June's younger brother Buddie is taken with Hale as well, and Hale begins to teach the boy. Neither family trusts this outsider.

- The Trail of the Lonesome Pine was the second full-length feature film shot in three-strip Technicolor and the first in color to be shot outdoors, made with the approval of the Technicolor Corporation.
- Henry Fonda told interviewer James Bawden in 1976 that he carved "HF LUVS SS" on a tree during production; director Henry Hathaway came across the carving in 1959 while shooting Woman Obsessed there.
- "Twilight on the Trail", one of two songs written by composer Louis Alter and lyricist Sidney D. Mitchell and sung by Fuzzy Knight, became a popular classic, inspired a 1941 film of the same name and was recorded by country, pop, rock and soul singers.
