Stewart Granger
Biography
Stewart Granger was a British film actor who became a leading man in heroic and romantic roles from the 1940s to the early 1960s. Born in Kensington, west London, he trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and began as a film extra in 1933. His breakthrough came with his first starring part as Rokeby in The Man in Grey (1943), a Gainsborough melodrama that made him a box-office name in Britain. Moving to Hollywood, he signed with MGM and starred in King Solomon's Mines (1950), Scaramouche (1952), and The Prisoner of Zenda (1952). Other notable films included Beau Brummell (1954), Moonfleet (1955), Bhowani Junction (1956), North to Alaska (1960), and The Wild Geese (1978). He also worked in television, playing Colonel Mackenzie in The Men from Shiloh, and appeared on Broadway in The Circle.

Big break
In the Gainsborough Pictures period melodrama The Man in Grey (1943), Granger played Rokeby, an acid-tongued character, in what was his first starring film role. The movie turned him and his three co-stars into box-office names in Britain.
A role that slipped away
Granger reportedly said no to playing Messala in Ben-Hur, the 1959 film, seemingly since he did not want to be billed second to Charlton Heston.
Big break
Granger's signing for King Solomon's Mines was announced in August 1949 after Errol Flynn was offered the role of Allan Quatermain but turned it down.

Granger's first film appearance came in 1933, when he worked as an extra. The Song You Gave Me was the movie he started with that year.
