Basil Sydney
Biography
Basil Sydney was an English actor of stage and screen. Born in Essex in 1894, he came to prominence in London with Edward Sheldon's 1915 hit Romance, and he also appeared in a 1920 silent film of the play. His Broadway debut came when the play was revived in New York in 1921; he stayed in the city for over ten years, playing Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Domin in R.U.R., Richard Dudgeon in The Devil's Disciple, Prince Hal in Henry IV, Part I and the title role in Hamlet. In the West End he starred in the mystery Blondie White in 1937 and, in 1946, appeared at the Piccadilly Theatre in A Man About the House alongside Flora Robson. Among his more than fifty films were Treasure Island (1950), Ivanhoe (1952), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956) and Hamlet (1948), in which he played Claudius for Laurence Olivier. The stage remained the center of his career.

Big break
Sydney became known in 1915 through the London stage success Romance, written by Edward Sheldon, acting alongside American Broadway star Doris Keane. He appeared with Keane again in the play's 1920 silent film.

When Keane brought Romance back to New York City in 1921, Sydney took the lead part and made his Broadway debut there.
