Plot summary
Set in the later years of King George III's reign, George Bryan Brummell serves as a captain in the Army. At a parade inspected by the Prince of Wales, the two argue about the uniform, which the Prince designed himself and which Brummell considers impractical for service. The Prince orders him off the parade, and a quarrel at dinner ends with Brummell dismissed from the Army. Lady Patricia Belham, who attends the parade with Mrs. Maria Anne Fitzherbert, the Prince's mistress, meets him there. Brummell makes his criticisms of the Prince in public, and his comments appear in the newspapers. Summoned to be admonished, he instead becomes a friend and close advisor to the Prince and a figure of fashion in London, known among the elite for his taste and the styles he sets, while his debts keep growing.

The film's deathbed reconciliation between Brummell and the Prince is an anachronism: the real Brummell died at Caen in 1840, outliving George IV, who died in 1830, by almost ten years.- Long before Elizabeth Taylor played Lady Patricia Belham, Hedda Hopper announced in January 1953 that Stewart Granger would be teamed with Eleanor Parker, and in April Deborah Kerr was announced instead.
- In the film Brummell describes himself as the son of "a secretary to a nobleman", but the real Brummell's father, William Brummell, was a London confectioner who later became private secretary to former Prime Minister Lord North, and a Berkshire landowner by his death in 1795.
