Plot summary
It is 1883, and buffalo hunting has cut the herds from sixty million to three thousand. Sandy McKenzie, a famous hunter for the Army Engineers, loses his small herd of cattle when stampeding bison trample it, and he takes a new partner, Charles Gilson, who believes that killing is natural. Gilson takes intense pleasure in a stand, killing a whole herd of buffalo at one time, while McKenzie has grown tired of the hunt. An old friend of McKenzie's, the legendary skinner Woodfoot, who walks on a peg leg, joins them. So does the young half-Indian Jimmy O'Brien. The four hunt the last of the buffalo.
