Flora Robson

Biography

Flora Robson was an English actress whose stage and screen work ranged from queens to murderers. Born in South Shields, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her stage debut in 1921, but struggled early on before Tyrone Guthrie asked her to join his company in Cambridge, where her performance in Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author brought attention. She was leading lady at the Old Vic in 1933 and became known for dramatic, emotionally intense roles. Her films included Black Narcissus (1947), Saraband for Dead Lovers (1948), 55 Days at Peking (1963), and Murder at the Gallop (1963). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Saratoga Trunk (1945), and was made a CBE in 1952 and a Dame Commander in 1960. She continued acting into old age, last appearing briefly in Clash of the Titans (1981).

After failing to get acting work, Robson left the stage when she was 23. She then became a welfare officer at the Nabisco shredded wheat factory located in Welwyn Garden City.
