Plot summary
Rian Mitchell, a mining engineer in Colombia, is after wealth. In the highlands he finds Carrero, a lost emerald mine that the Spanish conquistadors once operated. Local bandits, led by El Moro, and a savage jaguar are also in the region. Rian is taken to recuperate at the plantation home of Catherine Knowland, a coffee grower, and her brother Donald. He charms Catherine, and his partner is Vic Leonard.

- Grace Kelly refused MGM's wish to use her in Green Fire, wanting to make The Country Girl at Paramount instead; the studio refused to loan her out, so Kelly threatened to retire, and MGM eventually pushed back production and let her make it.
- Green Fire was based on the memoir of Major Peter William Rainier 1890-1945, a South African whose great-great-granduncle was the person Mount Rainier, Washington, was named after.
- In April 1954, a crew of 28 including Stewart Granger, Grace Kelly and Paul Douglas traveled to Colombia for three weeks of location filming; the shoot was plagued by weather, lack of facilities and complications from a recent military coup in the country.
- Several exteriors were filmed in the Hollywood Hills, just off Mulholland Drive, where the production company received permission to cut steps into part of the hill.
- Stewart Granger took over the male lead from Clark Gable after Gable's MGM contract was about to expire and he refused to re-sign.
