Plot summary
Stephen Lowry is the master of a Victorian house, and he poisons his wife. Lily Watkins is his Cockney maid, and she learns what he has done. She demands a promotion in return for her silence, and she takes the place of Lowry's dead wife. Lowry's attention turns to Elizabeth Travers, a wealthy man's daughter, while his lawyer David Macdonald cares for her as well.

- Director Arthur Lubin recalled that he had problems with his leading man, Stewart Granger, who hated him, and that Granger told Frankovich he would be sick the next day if Lubin did not stop annoying him.
- Arthur Lubin hoped to make the film in October 1949 from a script by Dorothy Reid with Glenn Ford starring, but he made Francis the Talking Mule instead and became busy doing comedies with animals.
