Plot summary
Lady Susan Ashlow has been paying attention to Henry Brittingham-Brett, her husband's best friend, in an attempt to make Sir Philip jealous. After a shipwreck, the three of them are stranded on a desert island. Philip builds a big hut for himself and Susan, and a small one for Henry. Henry soon suggests that the three share the island's food, water and Susan. Susan objects, but she is offended that Philip takes the suggestion calmly. Their argument grows, and Philip points out that as the ship's captain he could grant divorces as well as marriages. He leaves it to Susan to decide whether the men keep separate huts or share alike.

- Director Mark Robson said screenwriter F. Hugh Herbert had proved with The Moon Is Blue that censors did not mind characters talking about sex as long as nothing happened. The boyfriend became an old admirer of the woman, the couple were given a divorce on board the ship, and a dog was added to interrupt any potential sex moments.
- Before the leads were cast, David Niven, Noel Coward and Clifton Webb were discussed for the male roles and Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer were also discussed; by April the parts went to Niven, Ava Gardner and Stewart Granger.
- Nancy Mitford's English translation of the play ran for three years in the West End from 1950, with Robert Morley and David Tomlinson starring and Roger Moore as their understudy, after the Paris production ran for over 1,500 performances.
- Plans to shoot the whole film in England fell through because of a shortage of suitable studio space; the production filmed for six weeks at Cinecitta Studios in Rome and did post-production back in England.
