Vittorio De Sica
Biography
Vittorio De Sica was an Italian actor and film director who became a central figure in neorealism. Born in Sora in 1901, he moved with his family to Rome and began acting in amateur plays as a teenager. He started as a stage actor in the 1920s, and his first notable screen role was in Gli uomini, che mascalzoni. In 1940 he made his directing debut with Rose scarlatte. With screenwriter Cesare Zavattini he made the celebrated neorealist films Sciuscià and Bicycle Thieves, both of which won honorary Academy Awards. He also directed Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini, each of which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. As an actor he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for A Farewell to Arms (1957) and starred in Bread, Love and Dreams (1953) and its sequel Scandal in Sorrento (1955). His later work included Blood for Dracula (1974).

De Sica's first notable screen role came in 1932 in Gli uomini, che mascalzoni, and the song Parlami d'amore Mariù from it stayed his signature song for years.
First role
At 15, De Sica acted in amateur plays put on in hospitals for soldiers who were recovering. In 1917, a family friend helped him get a small part in the Alfredo De Antoni film The Clemenceau Affair.
Early training
De Sica began as a theater actor in the early 1920s and in 1923 joined Tatiana Pavlova's company. He spent two years with Pavlova and toured South America.
A first
De Sica's Sciuscià became the first foreign film recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Its critical success, together with Bicycle Thieves, helped establish the permanent Best Foreign Film Award.
