Plot summary
Michael Hamilton, a Philadelphia lawyer, arrives in Naples a few days before his wedding to see to the estate of his late brother, Joseph. Michael says he was in the city before, with the 5th US Army during World War II. He learns that Joseph had an eight-year-old son, Nando, looked after by the boy's maternal aunt, Lucia Curcio, a cabaret singer. Nando's mother drowned with Joseph in a boating accident, and the two never married. Joseph's wife, left in Philadelphia in 1950, is still alive. He also finds that Joseph put a fortune into fireworks.
