Joe January, an experienced guide in Timbuktu, is hired to take Paul Bonnard on a treasure hunting expedition into the Sahara. Paul's dead father claimed to have found a lost city, and Paul is determined to confirm the claim, taking charge of the party himself. Dita, a woman of doubtful reputation, is drawn to Paul because he is willing to overlook her past, so she invites herself along despite Joe's objections. Joe goes with them reluctantly. The crossing proves a hard, dry ordeal, the water runs low, and an attraction grows between Joe and Dita that raises tension among the three travelers.
