Plot summary
In Italy of the early 1960s, Luciana's employer forbids married women and children, so she and Renzo hide their wedding and live in her family's crowded apartment. Dr. Antonio Mazzuolo patrols Rome against vice and immorality, and a billboard of a provocatively posed woman advertising milk rises in the park near his home while children sing its jingle. Pupe reads the newspapers about her husband Conte Ottavio and his visits to call girls, then announces that she will earn her own money. Zoe, who manages a carnival booth and owes back taxes, offers a night with her as a lottery prize, which draws both a sacristan and a jealous cowboy.
