Plot summary
Not long after her 80th birthday, Lady Louise Lendale goes to her summerhouse with Sir Percy, the poet who is writing her biography, so that she can tell him the story of her life. She starts with the island of Corsica, which she left for Paris, and the brothel called Le Mouton Bleu, where she worked as a laundress. There she fell in love with Armand, a thief and an anarchist, and became his mistress. While Armand is away working for a revolutionary movement, Louise meets Dicky, Lord Lendale, a wealthy Englishman who is enchanted by her. He offers her a bargain: he will help her and Armand escape the police if she agrees to join with him and let Armand's child be raised as his own. He explains that he wants new blood in his family.

- The film's years-long delay was blamed on the novel's grim ending: director Peter Ustinov said it was feared theater audiences would burst out laughing at the book's macabre climax, and after years of debate he supplied the solution, cut it.
