Plot summary

Ephraim Cabot is a widower whose hunger for his New England farm rules him, and he means to keep it. Two wives have died under the work he laid on them, and his three sons labor for him as well. The land came from the second of those wives, and as she was dying she asked Eben, her youngest, to claim the farm for himself. Eben pays Simeon and Peter, his half-brothers, for their shares, using money he takes from his father, and the two leave for California. Ephraim then brings home Anna, a headstrong woman from Italy he has married, and she and Eben each want the farm.
