Plot summary
The war in Europe has just ended, and General George S. Patton orders hoarded Nazi gold moved by train to the Reichsbank in Frankfurt. The shipment never reaches the city: in a railroad tunnel, robbers use poison gas to kill fifty-nine U.S. Army military policemen and take the gold, which is valued at a quarter of a billion dollars. Patton, who toward the end of the war had argued for invading the Soviet Union, opens an investigation that points first at OSS Major Joe De Lucca, whose wartime plan for seizing the gold was used in the robbery. De Lucca begins an inquiry of his own into who took the plan and the gold.
