Plot summary
Jan Van Rooyer, a young Dutch painter employed at a private gallery in London, goes to the home of Jacqueline Cousteau. Finding the door open, he steps inside, pours a drink, and starts a loud jazz record. About twenty minutes later, uniformed police arrive, followed by Inspector Morgan; a call from the flat has brought them, and they discover Jacqueline dead in the bedroom. Jan must explain his presence. In flashbacks, he recounts meeting Jacqueline at the gallery, where she asked him for private lessons. Although she said she was married, she soon posed for him as a model, and the two became lovers, ignoring their age gap and different social backgrounds. Now the police are suspicious, and Jan must clear his name.

- Virginia McKenna turned down the part of Lady Fenton in Blind Date, and Joseph Losey wanted Peter O'Toole for the police officer but the role was offered to Stanley Baker, who went on to make several films with Losey.
