Plot summary
Someone strikes novelist John Morlar over the head in his London flat, and Detective-Inspector Brunel, a French officer on an exchange scheme in London, arrives to investigate the apparent murder. He finds Morlar still breathing and has him rushed to hospital, where Morlar lies on life support. From Morlar's journals and from Dr. Zonfeld, the psychiatrist Morlar had been consulting, Brunel pieces together a life marked by catastrophes and by the sudden deaths of people who had offended Morlar, beginning in childhood, when his parents were killed on a coastal holiday and the family car went over a cliff. Morlar became convinced that he had willed such events, a conviction strengthened when a fortune teller examined his hands, grew unsettled at what he foresaw, and returned his fee. Zonfeld asks whether he believes palmistry can predict the future.
