Gordon Jackson

Biography

A Scottish actor, Gordon Jackson started his film career in 1942 when Ealing Studios chose him for The Foreman Went to France. He went on to appear in The Captive Heart (1946) and Whisky Galore! (1949), and he worked in repertory theater early on. He played Captain Jimmy Cairns in Tunes of Glory (1960) and had supporting parts in The Great Escape (1963) and The Ipcress File (1965), while his BAFTA nomination for Yesterday's Enemy came in 1960. He appeared in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and won a Clarence Derwent Award for playing Horatio in Hamlet. He became a household name as butler Angus Hudson in Upstairs, Downstairs, earning another BAFTA nomination in 1975 and an Emmy in 1976, and he played George Cowley in The Professionals from 1977. Later he won a Logie Award for A Town Like Alice and appeared in The Shooting Party (1985) and The Whistle Blower (1986). He died in 1990.

First role
In 1942, Ealing Studios producers wanted a young Scot for The Foreman Went to France, and Jackson was suggested for the part. He went back to his Rolls-Royce job, then was asked to do more films and chose acting as his career.
A change of course
Jackson narrated two afternoon cookery shows for TVNZ in New Zealand, Fresh and Fancy Fare and its successor Country Fare, between 1985 and 1986.
