John Normington
Biography
John Normington was an English actor best known for his television work, though the stage was central to his long career. Born in Dukinfield, Cheshire, in 1937, he first studied opera singing, then acted with repertory companies in Oldham and Manchester before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963; he appeared in more than 20 RSC productions and played many Shakespearean roles, and he also worked at the National Theatre and in the West End. His television debut came in 1963, and over the following decades he turned up in Upstairs, Downstairs, Crown Court, Yes, Prime Minister and Inspector Morse, among others. His film work included Stardust (1974), Rollerball (1975), The Medusa Touch (1978), The Thirty Nine Steps (1978), A Private Function (1984), Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil (1985) as Himmler, and Wilt (1989). He died in 2007.
