Biography

Nathan Lane is an American actor whose work ranges across Broadway, film, television, and voice acting. Born in Jersey City, he made his professional theater debut off-Broadway in 1978 in A Midsummer Night's Dream and reached Broadway in a 1982 revival of Present Laughter. He had a long collaboration with playwright Terrence McNally and won three Tony Awards: for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1996), The Producers (2001), and Angels in America (2018). He also earned Tony nominations for Death of a Salesman, The Front Page, The Nance, and Guys and Dolls. On screen, he voiced Timon in The Lion King (1994) and appeared in The Birdcage (1996), Mousehunt (1997), The Producers (2005), and Beau Is Afraid (2023). His television work includes The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story and a 2022 Emmy-winning role on Only Murders in the Building. The American Theater Hall of Fame inducted him in 2008.

  1. About the name

    Nathan Lane changed his professional name because a Joseph Lane was already registered with Actors' Equity, choosing Nathan after the character Nathan Detroit from Guys and Dolls.

  2. A role that slipped away

    Lane took over from Richard Dreyfuss in the West End production of The Producers after Dreyfuss was let go a week before the first preview, and Lane won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

  3. Behind the award

    Lane received a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his recurring part on the Hulu show Only Murders in the Building. It was his first Emmy win, coming after a record seven nominations in the guest actor categories.

  4. Behind the camera

    Lane kept working with Sondheim. In 2004, he revised the original book for The Frogs and acted in the show's Broadway debut at Lincoln Center.
