Plot summary
Trixie Zurbo works as a security guard, passed over at work and numbed by witnessing a colleague's murder. She longs to become a private detective and takes a relatively easy job in security at a lakefront casino, working undercover to watch for pickpockets. Among the regulars she meets are Kirk Stans, the lounge act at the casino, a heavy drinker and a dead-on mimic; Ruby Pearli, a young, glamorous barfly who knows the place; and Dex Lang, a raffish ladies' man whose attention she does not find easy to ignore. Her command of the English language is unschooled, and she is given to malapropisms.
