Plot summary
Frederick and Eleanor Little, who live in Manhattan, visit an orphanage to adopt a brother for their son, George. George had asked for a little brother, and the Littles bring home Stuart, a charming mouse. George refuses to treat him as a brother, and Snowbell, the family cat, is disgusted at having a mouse as his master. Stuart's first days in the house go badly when he is trapped in the washing machine and falls ill, though he recovers. When the extended family comes to meet him, George tells them Stuart is only a mouse. Feeling an empty space, Stuart asks his new parents to inquire about his biological parents. Snowbell and his friend Monty, an alley cat, meet Monty's superior, Smokey, and a plan to dispose of Stuart takes shape.

- A painting hung in the Littles' home was Robert Bereny's long-lost Sleeping Lady with Black Vase; a set designer had bought it for 500 dollars in a Pasadena antiques shop. Art historian Gergely Barki spotted it on television in 2009, and in 2014 it sold at auction for 229,500 euros.
