Plot summary
Sidney Hall is eighteen and lives with his mother Velouria, who is abusive, and his disabled father Gerald. He reads his English class a story drawn from a sixth-grade incident and is nearly expelled until Duane Jones, another English teacher, intervenes and urges him to keep writing. Brett Newport, a schoolmate who bullies others, asks Sidney to help dig up a package the two buried as small children. Sidney refuses at first, then agrees after watching Brett bully a classmate, on the condition that the bullying stops. They dig the package up, and Brett's father, Judge George Newport, arrives and forces Brett to hand it to Sidney. A love letter from someone signing herself Melody arrives at his house, and Melody Jameson, a girl across the street, is hesitant to speak with him.

- Jim Sturgess was previously attached to play Sidney Hall, and Shawn Christensen auditioned many young male actors before casting 24-year-old Logan Lerman, who plays the character at all three stages of his life.
- Shawn Christensen wrote the spec script for Sidney Hall with his best friend and roommate Jason Dolan while touring the United States with his band Stellastarr in 2004, and shared it in increments with Paul Wesley.
- Roughly a third of the film is set in a suburb inspired by Christensen's hometown of Wappingers Falls, New York, but the suburban scenes were shot in Rockland County, New York, because a tax credit made production cheaper there.
- Darren Morze began writing the score before principal photography, working on a computer in his home studio, so the music could be played on set to help the actors understand the mood of their scenes.
