Plot summary
Dan Hanson writes obituaries at the Baltimore Sun, where Lorie Bryer writes weddings. He is conservative and she is liberal, and when a column opens up, the editors split it between them, running their opposing opinions side by side. The arrangement makes them rivals, then local television names: the producer Wally Thurman offers them a talk show built on their disagreements about civic issues. Off camera the two grow close despite their differences; Dan guards his freedom and avoids commitment, while Lorie has just ended a relationship and is open to one. Their three years together are told twice, first through Dan's account and then through Lorie's.
