Plot summary
Paul Gray, a young Englishman, awaits execution for the murder of Captain Hamilton, an officer of the Royal Air Force. His sister Pamela is convinced he is innocent, and she and her fiancé Neil Howard ask Charlie Chan, a detective visiting England, to take up the case and find the real killer. Chan's inquiry leads him to a lavish country manor house, where the possible suspects range from the housekeeper to a lawyer. Events at the manor soon show that the killer is still at large and trying to avoid capture, and Chan must work out which member of the household is responsible.
