Plot summary
Henry Wilton, a financier, has spent a year in Europe arranging war debt repayments and comes home looking forward to seeing his family. Only his butler, Connors, is at the station; Henry is a day early, his daughter Peggy has taken up acting, and his son Eddie plays polo. At the house, his much-younger wife Emmy is hosting a recital by the composer Pietro Rafaelo and has redecorated his bedroom, with his comfortable chair removed. Business rival Partington refuses to honor an unwritten deal to sell Henry a stock. Tired of the family's social schedule, and hearing from Connors that poor people cannot go out so often, Henry resolves to tell them he is ruined.
