Plot summary
On a rainy afternoon in Paris, actor Philippe Martin arrives at a darkened movie theater for a rendezvous with his mistress Yvonne, a married woman. He sits in the wrong seat and kisses Monique Pelerin, whose father is a powerful publisher, and who is engaged to Count Alfredo Donstelli. Monique accuses him publicly, and he is charged with assault. A priggish figure at the head of the Purity League seizes on the episode, which grows into a national scandal and gives Philippe the nickname The Kissing Monster. In court Philippe explains that Monique's beauty overwhelmed him and that a Frenchman is romantic by nature, even with a stranger, a story that shields Yvonne.
