Phyllis Barry
Biography
Phyllis Barry was an English film actress who appeared in more than 40 films between 1925 and 1947. Born in Leeds, she trained with a John Tiller troupe and later moved to Australia, where she performed as Phyllis du Barry and made her screen debut in Painted Daughters; Sunrise followed in 1926. After stage work in musicals and revues, she went to the United States, and King Vidor chose her for the other woman role in Cynara (1932), opposite Ronald Colman and Kay Francis. Barry then played comic foils, appearing with Buster Keaton and Jimmy Durante in What! No Beer? and with Wheeler and Woolsey in Diplomaniacs. Her status dropped after 1934, and she accepted small character roles in films with British settings, among them Bonnie Scotland (1935), The Prince and the Pauper (1937), and Bulldog Drummond Comes Back (1937). She also appeared in short comedies for Hal Roach and Columbia.
