Plot summary
In Paris, the surgeon Doctor Gogol never misses a performance by the actress Yvonne Orlac at the Théâtre des Horreurs. After her last show he greets her and learns that she is married to the pianist Stephen Orlac and that the couple is leaving for England. Gogol leaves the theater and buys the wax figure of the character she played. Stephen, on a train from Fontainebleau, glimpses Rollo, a knife-thrower bound for the guillotine, and Gogol later watches that execution himself. That night the train crashes. Yvonne finds Stephen with his hands destroyed and takes him to Gogol, who agrees to reconstruct his hands.

- After Mad Love's initial release, MGM cut about fifteen minutes of scenes, among them the surgery that gave Stephen Orlac Rollo's hands, a pre-credit warning scene almost identical to the one in Frankenstein, and Isabel Jewell's entire portrayal of Marianne.
- Mad Love was the final directing job for German émigré filmmaker Karl Freund and the American film debut of Peter Lorre, the German actor who played Dr. Gogol.
- In the United Kingdom, Edward Shortt of the British Board of Film Classification initially declared his intention to ban the film.
