Plot summary
In 1780 in Frankfurt, Nathan Rothschild, a boy, alerts his parents Mayer and Guttle to the arrival of the tax collector, and the family hides its wealth. The collector asks for twenty thousand gulden but settles for a bribe and a smaller assessment. A courier carrying ten thousand gulden for Mayer is stopped, and the money is taken. Mayer tells his sons to pursue money, since it is power and a protection for their people. As he is dying, he asks each of his five sons to open a bank in a different city: Frankfurt, Vienna, London, Naples and Paris, so the brothers can draw on one another rather than ship gold. Thirty-two years later, the Napoleonic Wars spread across Europe, and the brothers are approached for loans.

- Zanuck, who was not Jewish, produced The House of Rothschild as an attack on Nazism and antisemitism after Hitler's rise to power in Germany in 1933.
- Zanuck faced behind-the-scenes opposition from Jewish groups such as the Anti-Defamation League, but Hays Office official James Wingate found no cause for objection and suggested showing the screenplay to a representative of the German government, which Zanuck refused.
- Two scenes from The House of Rothschild were used without the copyright holders' permission in The Eternal Jew, the German antisemitic propaganda film of 1940.
- Its final sequence was one of the first shot in the three-strip Technicolor process, even though nearly all of The House of Rothschild is in black and white; MGM's The Cat and the Fiddle, released in February 1934, was the other.
- The romance between Captain Fitzroy and Julie Rothschild is fictional, since Nathan Rothschild had no daughter named Julie. The real Fitzroy who became his son-in-law married Hannah, Nathan's second daughter, in 1839, after Nathan died in 1836.
