Plot summary
Mr. Moto is out to break a secret smuggling ring. In disguise as a street vendor, he goes into a shop to sell a rare diamond and finds a body hidden in a wicker basket. He subdues the shopkeeper with judo. Later he takes a stateroom on a passenger liner bound for Shanghai. Bob Hitchings Jr., son of the shipping line's owner, is also on board with a confidential letter from his father for the head of the Shanghai branch. Moto notices the letter, and the two men become friends. Bob complains that he has met no beautiful women. After a stop in Honolulu, Gloria Danton boards, and she and Bob fall in love.

- Peter Lorre, who had just signed with Fox after making Crack-Up and Nancy Steele Is Missing!, was cast as Mr. Moto in January 1937. He said he accepted the role because it gave him a rare chance to play a hero.
- Director Norman Foster was given a script by Howard Smith and rewrote it extensively; the finished film is very different from the novel, although it uses some of the same names.
