Plot summary
Nick Wells is a master safe-cracker. After a burglary almost goes wrong, he thinks about quitting to be with Diane, his girlfriend, and to operate his Montreal jazz club as a lawful owner. He refuses another job from Max, his fence. An ambitious thief named Jack Teller, the job's planner, visits Nick and changes his mind. Nick agrees to take part only if he runs the operation, and he bargains for a six-million-dollar share from Max. The prize is a royal scepter. Smuggled into Canada and found by customs, it now sits in a heavily secured basement at the Montreal Customs House. Jack has already gotten inside the building by working there as a janitor, and Nick locates a path through the sewers. Diane is upset that Nick has taken this final score and questions their future.

- Marlon Brando repeatedly argued with director Frank Oz and called him "Miss Piggy", the Muppet Oz played from 1976 to 2001. Brando performed scenes in his underwear and at times refused to be directed by Oz, so Robert De Niro took over directing while Oz instructed via an assistant director.
- Frank Oz said he and Marlon Brando disagreed over the creative interpretation of the role, that the producers backed Oz, and that Brando eventually came around to his side. Oz also blamed himself for the tension, calling himself confrontational rather than nurturing toward Brando's acting style.
